ONLINE\n

This course will present an overview of the development, and the authority, of the Constitution and Canons of The Episcopal Church. It seeks to equip students with the knowledge of both the content of the Constitution and Canons and the ways by which the canons of the church govern the life and witness of The Episcopal Church. An in- depth consideration of the organizational and political processes that lead to constitutional and canonical change will assist students pursuing both lay and ordained ministries to know both how decisions are made at the churchwide level and also prepare to be active participants in the councils of the Church. The course will provide a general overview of the content of the canons while also focusing on pertinent canonical titles related to the doctrine, discipline, and worship of The Episcopal Church. As such, matters of Episcopal Church polity will be central to our discussions. The disciplinary canons of the church (Title IV: Ecclesiastical Discipline) will be reviewed at length so that students, especially those pursuing ordination in The Episcopal Church, will know what is expected of them regarding discipline, and how parties can seek “healing, repentance, forgiveness, restitution, justice, amendment of life and reconciliation” when trust has been betrayed. The review of Title IV will qualify as appropriate training regarding the church’s discipline for those preparing for ordination in The Episcopal Church. (Canon III.6.5.g.3). In content and pedagogy, this practical course hopes to make the polity and canons of The Episcopal Church accessible, comprehensible, and pertinent to the life and ministry of the student.\n

Instructor Bio:\n

The Rt. Rev. Ian T. Douglas, Ph.D., retired in 2022 as the 15th Bishop Diocesan of The Episcopal Church in Connecticut, comprised of approximately 160 parishes and faith communities in the state of Connecticut. Elected in October 2010, he was ordained bishop in April 2010. From 1989 to 2010, he was a faculty member at the Episcopal Divinity School, then located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he was the Angus Dun Professor of Mission and World Christianity. Douglas also served as Priest Associate at St. James’s Episcopal Church in Cambridge, Massachusetts, from 1989-2010.\n
