Introduction to Islamic Medicine: Wholesome Living through the Prophetic Tradition\n

Tibb al-Nabawi (Prophetic Medicine) is a living, holistic healing tradition grounded in Islam, and it is practiced by many people across cultures throughout the world today. This course introduces students to the theory and practice of this tradition. The spiritual and historical origins of this tradition will be explored, and its underlying theoretical paradigm (i.e., its epistemological and cosmological groundings) will be contrasted with that of modern industrial medicine. Basic terms such as health, disease and medicine will be defined, and core lifestyle factors which contribute to health and disease, especially in today's modern context, will be discussed. Students will also have an opportunity to engage in experiential learning and reflect on their own health and wellness goals. This course is designed for students from all backgrounds, including those from diverse faith backgrounds and those with interests in health care and integrative and holistic health.\n

Instructor Bios:\n

Instructor: Hakim M. Salim Khan M.D. (M.A.) M.H. D.O. is a world-renowned expert, educator, and clinician in the Tibb tradition. He is the principal of the College of Medicine and Healing Arts in the UK and is also the director of Mohsin Health Products. With over 45 years of clinical experience, he has helped thousands of patients in the UK achieve better health and vitality. Hakim Salim is a founder trustee of the World Unani Foundation, and he is the president of the Guild of Naturopathic Iridologists International. His teachers and inspirations in Tibb include Shabeer Hussain (ra), Moulana Nisaar Ahmed (ra), and Hakim Nabi Khan (ra). Additionally, he trained in herbal medicine and osteopathy with the General Council and Register of Consultant Medical Herbalists (now IRCH), and he studied iridology and nutrition with Dr B.C. Jensen and Farida Sharan. He also taught nutrition and iridology at the School of Iridology and Wholistic Healing in Cambridge, England.\n

Assistant Instructor: Sarah Mallik MD, MA, DHNM (Tibb) is an Assistant Professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She has worked as a clinician and educator in the Primary Care and Social Internal Medicine Residency Program at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, NY for the past ten years. She received her medical degree from the Yale School of Medicine, and she completed her MA in Religion with a concentration in Interreligious Engagement at Union Theological Seminary. Since 2022, she has been studying Tibb under the guidance of Hakim M. Salim Khan at the College of Medicine and Healing Arts (COMHA) in the UK. She received her Diploma in Herbal and Naturopathic Medicine from COMHA in 2025.\n
